COLUMBUS—Today the ACLU of Ohio gave testimony to the Ohio House Local Government Committee on House Bill 407, which attempts to put in place standards for the use of police body worn cameras. The ACLU expressed concerns about the lack of specific guidance in the proposed legislation.
COLUMBUS—Today, the Supreme Court of Ohio ruled 5-2 that the sale of Lake Erie Correctional Institution did not violate the state Constitution. The prison was sold in 2011 to Corrections Corporation of America for over $72 million.
COLUMBUS—The ACLU of Ohio supports a directive issued by Secretary of State Jon Husted today that will improve Ohio’s vote by mail system. These changes will lead to more absentee ballots being properly counted and not discarded due to technical errors.
AKRON—The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio sent a letter today to Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan and Akron City Council urging them to repeal immediately an ordinance against panhandling that violates the First Amendment by making it a crime to ask a neighbor for help.

COLUMBUS—The Supreme Court of Ohio has opened the public comment period for Local Juvenile Restraint Rule 5.01, a Rule of Superintendence for the Courts of Ohio which would prohibit the automatic and indiscriminate shackling of children appearing in juvenile court.
