Journalists for the “Delinquent” series asked whether Cuyahoga County’s juvenile justice system is working as designed and at what point did it potentially fail the kids who are in Ohio’s adult prisons today - What did they find? How did they approach youth and young adults to share their stories? What did they learn in the process of investigating and reporting in this way? How if at all does it impact how they will report on young people and the justice system in the future? What advice might they offer to consumers of media and fellow reporters covering the criminal legal system?
These and other questions will be explored to help us understand how journalists and other media professionals can strive to amplify youth and family lived experiences in reporting, and to highlight the conditions that are often the root causes of crime rather than sensationalizing crime and violence. Join Journalists Kaitlin Durbin and John Tucker in conversation with Leah Winsberg, Esq., Senior Policy Attorney and Cyan Blackwell, Youth Justice Policy Associate at the Children's Law Center; Gabriella Celeste, J.D., Policy Director at the Schubert Center for Child Studies, CWRU; and Pat Gleydura, Policy Strategist at the ACLU of Ohio for this free, public webinar as part of the Greater CLE Youth Justice Collective series to improve understanding and outcomes of young people caught up in the justice system.
