Put in your information first, then in the “Tribute and Memorial Giving Information” section you can add in whom you are giving the gift in honor of, and indicate whom we should notify of your memorial or honorary gift.
Are both the ACLU and the ACLU of Ohio Foundation eligible to receive a gift of IRA assets? Only the ACLU of Ohio Foundation is eligible to receive a gift through your IRA. Gifts from your IRA to the ACLU of Ohio Foundation 501(c)3 are Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs).
Is there a minimum/maximum dollar amount to make a gift? There is no minimum gift amount required by the ACLU of Ohio Foundation. You should, however, check with your IRA administrator to see whether or not they have policies regarding minimum transfer amounts.
The maximum dollar amount that you can give to the ACLU of Ohio Foundation through your IRA assets is $100,000 per calendar year (married couples may each give $100,000 from the individual IRA accounts).
Will my gift satisfy my Required Minimum Distribution? Yes. Direct transfers from your IRA to the ACLU of Ohio Foundation will be applied to your Required Minimum Distribution.
How do I make an IRA gift? Once you decide to proceed with a gift, contact your IRA administrator, well in advance of the December 31st deadline, and tell them that you would like to make a direct “charitable IRA rollover” to the ACLU of Ohio Foundation. You may need to provide our Tax ID number/EIN: 23-7137105.
Please let us know about your gift so we can let you know when we receive the check from your financial institution! You can do so by emailing [email protected] or calling (614) 586-1959. If you do not inform the ACLU of Ohio of your gift, it could arrive from your administrator as a “mystery gift,” with no information telling us that you were the donor.
A donor-advised fund (DAF) is an investment account with the sole purpose of supporting charitable organizations you care about. When you contribute cash, securities, or other assets to your DAF, you’ll enjoy an immediate tax deduction—and easily support the ACLU of Ohio Foundation and other charities that matter to you.

One of the most important ways that you can express your personal commitment to the mission and work of the ACLU of Ohio is by making a gift through your will or trust. Legacy gifts provide financial support for the protection of civil liberties and guarantee the ACLU of Ohio is equipped to continue the fight to protect Constitutional rights.
Including the ACLU of Ohio in your Will
You may include the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio or the ACLU of Ohio Foundation as a beneficiary of your will for a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or as a contingent beneficiary.
Although both the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio and the ACLU of Ohio Foundation accept bequests, only those to the ACLU of Ohio Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, qualify for the estate tax charitable deduction.
What Language should I use?
When your attorney drafts your will, we suggest using the following language:
“I give to the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio Foundation, Inc. [(the sum of $___) or (all or __ percent of my residuary estate)] to be used for its general purposes.”
Or
“I give to the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio, Inc. [(the sum of $___) or (all or __ percent of my residuary estate)] to be used for its general purposes.”
